Afraid of the edge.

For years I was obsessed with softening edges and lines in my paintings. Every defined edge looked contrived and clumsy to me. Through the practice of knocking down and obscuring edges my painting process became, and is today, one of building up and tearing down. Although ridiculously unproductive, the process leaves layers of "artifacts" that could never be achieved in one painting pass. More recently I've been pushing art to include edges and sharp lines– because confident edge marks are beautiful and paintings with no sharpness can look mushy. It is life lesson for me. Fear is rarely useful, and putting yourself out there to be seen can be beautiful.
