Refusing to draw on the past is a blind burden on the present.

I've always been interested in making paintings that have a timeless traditional character but are unmistakably new. The problem is that the cool cats who get to decide what paintings get displayed and honored are only interested in things wholly contemporary. "Art of today" is the mantra where only now forms that comment on now issues are considered. The problem I see is that now has an extremely short attention span and although now is new today it is old tomorrow.
