Anti-painting?

Most days I remove more paint from my "paintings" than I put on. I joke that it's more like anti-painting– and it feels very anti-productive. However I'm obsessed with the subtle residue of color built up layer after layer and the deconstruction of line and opacity achieved by wiping away. But I say to myself it's so slow.

I recently came across a quote from the pinnacle of masters– James McNeill Whistler. He wrote to a friend in the early 1860s: "I am horribly depressed at the moment. It's always the same– work that's too hard and uncertain. I am so slow. I produce so little, because I rub out so much." Of course I do not hope to even begin to compare to Whistler, but I found great hope in sharing similar doubts about the act of painting and the process. It turned out ok for Whistler.
